Interview with 150 game veteran - Josh Sherwood

This week, Capalaba FC sat down with 150 game man and local identity, Josh Sherwood to have a quick chat.

CFC:     Josh, firstly congrats on 150 top team games. That milestone says a lot about your longevity in the game and, ultimately, your consistency over a number of years. You have played NPL, now FQPL and also BPL with Capalaba and a couple other teams. Where did it all start, and what do you put this longevity and consistency down to?

JS:       Thank you. I’m certainly proud of the big 150. I played my first top team game for CAPALABA when I was 15! That’s only 17 years ago! It’s been an amazing journey playing with some great players and coaches. I’ve had several years away from the dog’s but I’ve always thought of here as my home.

CFC: The team has had some good results this season, but there have also been some matches where points should have been picked up but they weren’t, the most recent match against Souths a prime example. What does Coach Booth and the team need to maintain high levels of performance and lock in the top position and ensure promotion?

JS: Football is a funny game. We have dropped points that we will regret but we have shown great character this year to be where we’re currently sitting. We just need to keep focusing on each game as it comes and continue to work hard at training and stay in a positive mindset.

CFC:     We all know you and your brother Jake work alongside each other daily and have also played a lot of football together over the years. What sets you apart on and off the field? Do different things drive you?

JS:       Being the bigger brother Jake tends to copy me a lot. I feel he learnt some of his best tackles from me haha. We have very similar goals on and off the field. We want to make an impact and we’re always here to win. We’re best mates so it’s more fun doing it together.

CFC:    On the field, Jake regularly touts himself as a centre back that should be a striker and that he could score more than you do. Do you ever get tired of him riding your success and trying to be something he isn’t? Should he just stick to something he seems to be good at and that is collecting yellow cards?

JS:       Jake can come and have a go up front if he likes. It’s a bit more pressure up here though. I think he’s scored before actually. Maybe. Has he? Sit down bro haha.

CFC:     It’s a momentous occasion for you this weekend, what are you and the team looking to take of this week’s match up against one of your old teams, Holland Park. Last time the two teams met, Stuey Edgar bagged 3 goals and you put one in. Stuey is out injured this time round. How do we combat that loss and ensure we score one more than the Hawks?

JS:       I won’t give the game plan away but if the lads find me anywhere around the box we should be sweet haha. This is huge game for us this weekend. Big loss losing Stuey but we know what we need to do to win and we will get it done. We all have our jobs and boothy and Matty know how to get the best out of the lads.

CFC:    Finally, the boys all seem to enjoy a bit of banter between themselves and have a lot of fun, who would you say is the most annoying player in the team, you know the team pest or that player that drives you nuts? Rhys has previously nominated Stuey, Nicholas Robinson and Ryan Cokell – who would you put in that category.

JS:       They’re good nominations but for me it’s all these young lads with their long hair. Ryo Ono, Connor Booth and Ryan Cokell. They usually take 10 mins before the game to make sure the head bands are on correctly. Looking good lads. Seriously though this season has been amazing. Great people, coaches and support and now it’s time to finish it off in style

CFC:     Good luck on Saturday evening and on behalf of Capalaba FC, congratulations on the milestone.

JS:       Thank you.
